The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party has approved the immediate dissolution of its entire Akwa Ibom State Executive Committee (EXCO), naming Igwat Umoren as Chairman of the interim committee to manage the party’s affairs for the next three months.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has executed a major shake-up within its Akwa Ibom State Chapter, confirming the dissolution of the entire State Executive Committee (EXCO).

The drastic decision was taken and approved by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at its meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2025, effectively ending the tenure of the previous state leadership.

In a swift move to fill the leadership vacuum, the NWC immediately sanctioned the composition of a robust 31-member caretaker committee. This interim body is mandated to take over and run the affairs of the Akwa Ibom State Chapter for a period not exceeding three months, or until a new, duly elected State Executive Committee is put in place.

Key Figures in the Interim Leadership

The newly appointed caretaker committee features a mix of seasoned party faithful and professionals charged with stabilising the chapter:

  • Chairman: Igwat Umoren
  • Deputy Chairman: Harrison Ekpo
  • Secretary: Borono Bassey
  • Publicity Secretary: Ewa Okpo (a lawyer)
  • Organising Secretary: Emman Mbong
  • Woman Leader: Mary Silvia Abara
  • Legal Adviser: Enoch Enoch (a lawyer)

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, released a statement urging all leaders, vital stakeholders, and the large membership base of the party in Akwa Ibom State to ensure they remain united and continue to work together for the overall progress of the PDP.

This dissolution is seen by political observers in the Niger Delta as a significant internal political manouevre aimed at re-strategising the party’s structure in the state ahead of future political contests.
