In a landmark achievement for the oil-rich Niger Delta state, the Bayelsa State Government under Governor Douye Diri has officially launched its state-owned airline, marking the historic inaugural flight of one of two newly acquired aircraft. The event, held at Bayelsa International Airport in Amassoma, Yenagoa, signals a new era of enhanced air connectivity, economic growth, and regional integration for Bayelsa and the broader Niger Delta.

Details of the Inaugural Flight

The ATR-72/600 aircraft, configured to accommodate 72 passengers and crew, departed from the domestic wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at 9:30 a.m. local time. Carrying approximately 50 passengers and crew, the flight touched down at Bayelsa International Airport at 10:40 a.m. amid jubilant celebrations from a large crowd of residents, dignitaries, and well-wishers.

Governor Diri himself led the flight, joined by prominent figures including:

  • Rear Adm. Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), immediate past Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Bayelsa Elders Council.
  • Members of the Bayelsa National Assembly Caucus.
  • Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil).
  • Dr. Sam Ogbuku, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
  • Prof. Ben Okaba, President of the Ijaw National Congress.
  • Dr. Boladei Igali, National Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

The aircraft, initially registered under Pioneer Airlines Nigeria, was acquired with financial support from Premium Trust Bank. Governor Diri has directed an immediate rebranding to either “Air Bayelsa” or “Bayelsa Air” to reflect its status as a fully state-owned entity before full commercial operations commence.

Vision and Future Operations

Addressing the gathering, Governor Diri described the launch as the fulfillment of a six-year promise to deliver reliable air connectivity. “Six years ago, we promised the people of Bayelsa a future of air connectivity and opportunity. Today, that promise takes flight: Bayelsa is launching its own commercial air services,” he stated. He emphasized the initiative’s role in bolstering the state’s aviation infrastructure, fostering commerce, and empowering residents by linking Bayelsa to national and international markets.

Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, announced that the airline will operate daily flights on the Lagos-Abuja routes, with expansions planned to other Niger Delta states to address longstanding logistics challenges in the region. Captain Henry Ungbuku, Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, which will handle initial operations, assured stakeholders that the service would embody the “dreams and aspirations of Bayelsa and the wider Niger Delta.”

Emmanuel Emefienim, Managing Director/CEO of Premium Trust Bank, hailed the partnership as a “strategic vision” that underscores the bank’s commitment to regional development.

Stakeholder Applause and Regional Impact

The launch drew widespread acclaim from regional leaders. Dr. Sam Ogbuku of the NDDC described it as a “welcome development” that would ease movement and connectivity across the Niger Delta, solving persistent logistical hurdles. Senator Friday Konbowei-Benson, speaking for the Bayelsa National Assembly Caucus, pledged full legislative support for the governor’s developmental agenda. Senator Lokpobiri urged sustainability by ensuring government officials pay for flights, while Dr. Igali and Prof. Okaba highlighted its potential to boost economic opportunities in the resource-rich but historically underserved area.

Governor Diri paid tribute to predecessors, including the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who envisioned the airport’s location, and former Governor Seriake Dickson, who completed its construction. He also thanked the Bayelsa State House of Assembly for its backing.

Broader Implications for the Niger Delta

This initiative comes at a pivotal time for the Niger Delta, where oil wealth has often been marred by infrastructure deficits and environmental challenges. By prioritizing intra-regional flights, Bayelsa aims to enhance trade, tourism, and access to essential services, potentially inspiring similar projects in neighboring states like Delta and Rivers. As the second aircraft prepares for commissioning, expectations are high for job creation, with Pioneer Airlines committing to local hiring and training programs.

The launch has trended across social media, with users on X (formerly Twitter) celebrating it as a “game-changer” for South-South connectivity. Commercial operations are slated to begin imminently, positioning Bayelsa as a key aviation hub in Nigeria’s southern corridor.
