President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate retirement of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the Service Chiefs, appointing new officers to lead the nation’s military and security structure.

The shake-up, announced by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, signals a major change in the security command architecture.

Sacked Officers:

The following top military officials were relieved of their duties:

  • Chief of Defence Staff: General Christopher Musa
  • Chief of Army Staff (COAS): Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja
  • Chief of Naval Staff (CNS): Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla
  • Chief of Air Staff (CAS): Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar

New Appointees:

President Tinubu immediately approved the appointment of new officers to fill the vacant positions, subject to confirmation by the National Assembly:

  • Chief of Defence Staff (CDS): Air Marshal Bala Yarima (promoted from Chief of Air Staff).
  • Chief of Army Staff (COAS): Major General Abiodun Olaniyi
  • Chief of Naval Staff (CNS): Rear Admiral Usman Ibrahim
  • Chief of Air Staff (CAS): Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Liman

The President commended the sacked Service Chiefs for their dedication and selfless service to the nation and urged the newly appointed military heads to intensify efforts in tackling security challenges across the country.
