Minister Says Rising Temperatures Increase Conflicts and Youth Crime

The Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, has raised concerns about how climate change is making life harder in the Niger Delta. He says that rising temperatures and sea levels are causing more community fights and leading to more young people turning to crime. The government is working on projects to reduce flooding and improve communication between communities. They are also looking into new business opportunities, like shrimp farming, to help create jobs and reduce youth restlessness.

In a recent meeting in Abuja, Minister Abubakar Momoh spoke about the serious effects of climate change on the Niger Delta region. He explained that rising sea levels and temperatures are not only damaging the environment but also causing more community conflicts and increasing crime among young people.

To combat these issues, the government, in partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), is building high embankments to prevent flooding. They are also opening up water channels to improve communication between communities, which is expected to boost economic activities.

Minister Momoh emphasized the need for strategic partnerships to address these challenges. He encouraged organizations to work with regional development commissions to find solutions. Additionally, he suggested exploring new economic opportunities, such as shrimp farming, to engage the youth and reduce restlessness.

The meeting also included discussions with the Academic Associates Peace Works (AAPW), a group studying climate change impacts in West Africa. They presented recommendations based on a three-year project, aiming to enhance government interventions in the region.

The Niger Delta faces unique challenges due to its coastal location and reliance on oil production. Addressing climate change impacts is crucial for the region’s stability and development.
