The Delta State House of Assembly has imposed a six-month suspension on the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Professor Emmanuel Achuenu, and the institution’s Bursar, following allegations of financial recklessness and gross administrative misconduct.
The decision was reached after the consideration and adoption of a report by a parliamentary investigative committee established to probe the polytechnic’s financial and administrative operations.
Details of Misconduct
The investigation uncovered what lawmakers described as “multiple instances of unauthorized expenditures and administrative lapses” under Professor Achuenu’s leadership. Specifically, the committee found that the Rector allegedly disregarded the directives of the Governing Council and violated established financial procedures in the management of the institution’s resources, an act the lawmakers deemed a “flagrant abuse of office.”
The Assembly’s resolution upheld the six-month suspension, which had been previously imposed by the Governing Council, and directed the Delta State Ministry of Higher Education to supervise the polytechnic’s affairs during this period to ensure stability and adherence to due process. The action was taken to reinforce accountability and restore public confidence in the state’s tertiary education system.
