The Edo State Government has commenced the process of absorbing approximately 4,000 volunteer teachers who have been participating in the state’s ‘EdoBEST’ educational reform programme. Additionally, the government has announced plans to recruit a further 500 qualified teachers to enhance its teaching workforce.
The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, during a briefing in Benin City. This action is part of the government’s sustained effort to reform and strengthen the public education system.
Details of the Recruitment and Absorption
- Absorption of Volunteers: The 4,000 volunteer teachers, who have been instrumental in supporting the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) initiative, will now be formally integrated into the state’s payroll as permanent staff. This move is intended to reward their service and dedication while providing stability to the teaching personnel.
- New Recruitment: The state is actively seeking to hire an additional 500 qualified teachers to fill critical gaps, particularly in specialist areas and in rural locations.
Commitment to Educational Reform
The Commissioner emphasised that the decision aligns with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to providing quality education across all public schools in the state. She noted that the absorption and subsequent recruitment are necessary to sustain the gains recorded through the EdoBEST programme, which focuses on technology-driven teaching methods and rigorous training.
Dr. Oviawe called on interested and qualified applicants to participate in the recruitment process, reaffirming the state’s dedication to maintaining high standards for all its educators.
