Stakeholders Advised to Work Together for Peace and Youth Development
The European Union (EU) and Search for Common Ground (SFCG) have called on Niger Delta stakeholders to take urgent action against rising drug abuse and conflicts in the region. They emphasised the need for community collaboration to ensure peace and a better future for young people.
The European Union (EU) and Search for Common Ground (SFCG) have urged leaders in the Niger Delta to address the growing problem of drug abuse and its link to conflicts in the region.
Speaking at a workshop in Port Harcourt, they stressed that drug abuse among young people is fueling violence and insecurity. They called for stronger collaboration among government officials, traditional rulers, security agencies, and civil society groups to tackle the crisis.
SFCG’s Country Director, Fatima Madaki, highlighted that drug abuse is not just a health issue but also a major cause of crime and violence in the Niger Delta. She urged leaders to adopt strategies that focus on rehabilitation, awareness campaigns, and economic opportunities for youths.
Representatives from the EU reaffirmed their commitment to supporting peace and stability in the region through funding and community engagement programmes.
Stakeholders at the event agreed that without immediate intervention, drug abuse could further destabilise the Niger Delta, affecting security, economic growth, and social development.
The EU and SFCG pledged continued support in helping communities find lasting solutions to these challenges.
