Rivers State hands over AW 139 helicopter to Nigerian Air Force to enhance regional safety

In a move to strengthen security, Governor Siminialayi Fubara has donated an AW 139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force. This gesture aims to improve surveillance and protection in Rivers State and the broader Niger Delta region.

Governor Siminialayi Fubara of Rivers State has taken a significant step to bolster security by donating a state-owned AW 139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The official handover occurred at the Air Force Base in Port Harcourt, where Governor Fubara emphasised the importance of utilising the helicopter primarily for enhancing security within Rivers State and the Niger Delta region.

Expressing concerns over past instances where donated security equipment was underutilised locally, the governor highlighted the need for the helicopter to be actively deployed in safeguarding lives and critical assets in the area. He remarked, “We have been faced with situations where we donate security boats, and they are not used to secure the lives of our people.” Governor Fubara urged that while the helicopter could serve various purposes, a substantial 70% of its use should focus on security operations within Rivers State.

This donation underscores the state government’s commitment to collaborating with federal agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. Governor Fubara reiterated that the gesture is devoid of political motives, stating it is “purely a support for the success of this country.” He also noted that enhancing security would lead to increased production levels, benefiting the state’s revenue.

The partnership between the Rivers State government and the Nigerian Air Force exemplifies a proactive approach to addressing security challenges, aiming for a safer and more prosperous Niger Delta region.
