Senior and Mid-Career Journalists Encouraged to Apply for Three-Day Training in Abuja on Ethical Reporting of Conflict and Missing Persons Cases. All Costs Covered.

HumAngle Media, in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has announced a Call for Applications for a prestigious, fully-funded fellowship aimed at strengthening ethical journalism in Nigeria, a critical skill for covering issues like those faced in the Niger Delta.

The three-day training, titled ‘The HumAngle Fellowship on Reporting Conflict and Missing Persons’, is designed to equip ten selected senior and mid-career journalists with the expertise needed to cover sensitive stories with compassion and integrity.

The fully-funded opportunity means that all participants will have their flights, accommodation, and meals covered for the entire programme.

What the Fellowship Covers

The training, which will run in Abuja from 4 to 6 November 2025, focuses on the complex nature of reporting armed violence and the national challenge of missing persons. This is particularly relevant to journalists in regions dealing with insurgency, communal clashes, and pipeline vandalism that often result in displacement and unaccounted citizens.

Key areas to be covered include:

  • Human-Centred Reporting: Learning ethical frameworks and trauma-informed approaches to interviewing vulnerable sources and ensuring their protection.
  • Nigeria’s Missing Persons Problem: Understanding the scale of the crisis, legal implications, and best practices for interacting with victims’ families.
  • Psychosocial Best Practices: Offering journalists tools to protect their own mental health and that of their sources during the editing and publishing process.

Who Should Apply?

HumAngle is specifically searching for serious, dedicated reporters who are already committed to covering conflict and think deeply about their craft.

The organisers are looking for journalists who:

  • Spend time perfecting every sentence to ensure clarity.
  • Worry about protecting the identity of sensitive sources without compromising the news.
  • Go the extra mile to make victims of violence comfortable during interviews to avoid re-traumatisation.

Freelance journalists are strongly encouraged to apply.

The training is expected to be a rigorous but highly rewarding experience. Interested journalists must ensure their employer or personal schedules allow for their full commitment to the entire duration of the fellowship.

The deadline for all applications is 14 October 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for virtual interviews before the final selection is made.
