Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has announced the commencement of the payment of a new minimum wage of N104,000 to the state’s workforce, making it the first state in Nigeria to implement the new rate.
The announcement was made by the governor himself during an interactive session with leaders of the organised labour movement in Owerri, the state capital, on Monday.
Details of the New Wage Implementation
- New Rate: The minimum wage for workers in the state has been increased to N104,000 per month.
- Effective Immediately: The Governor stated that the payment of the new wage would take immediate effect.
- Economic Rationale: Governor Uzodimma explained that the decision was a crucial measure to cushion the effects of the prevailing economic hardship and soaring inflation on civil servants. He acknowledged the difficult economic climate faced by workers and reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing their welfare.
The Governor’s office confirmed that the new minimum wage is part of a broader strategy by the state government to improve the quality of life for its citizens and maintain a harmonious relationship with the labour unions. The decision has been met with appreciation from the state chapters of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
