news that is shaking up Enugu State politics. The Labour Party (LP) in Enugu East Local Government Area has just faced a major loss.

Mr Afam Joseph Ogbene, who was the LP Chairman for that area, has now left the party. Even bigger news: all the key officials from the local wards—the entire executive team—have resigned with him. They have all now joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). This huge political defection happened just after Governor Peter Mbah, who was previously in the PDP, officially moved over to the APC himself.

Why the Switch?

Mr Ogbene explained that this big change was necessary, even though it was a difficult choice. He said the move was inspired by the work and leadership of Enugu Governor Peter Mbah. The officials now want to support the Governor’s plan to rebuild and transform Enugu State.

Ogbene also pointed out that their efforts in the Labour Party had become useless because of serious internal crises within the party. He became fully convinced that joining the Governor in the APC was the right decision, promising their full support to Governor Mbah, even looking ahead to the 2027 elections.

APC Celebrates

The APC has celebrated this major win. Deacon Okey Ogbodo, a high-ranking official in the state government, officially welcomed the new members. He called the move a “total collapse of the Labour Party in Enugu East,” noting that it was the first time this has happened in any local government in the state.

The Commissioner stressed that people from the South-East (Ndigbo) must now join the APC so they can be part of the main national politics where opportunities are shared. This Nigeria political news shows a growing trend of powerful figures aligning with the ruling national party.
