Commission Shifts Focus to Transformational Approaches for Lasting Peace
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is promoting inclusive and transformational conflict management strategies to achieve sustainable peace in the Niger Delta region. By involving traditional rulers and local communities, the NDDC aims to address the root causes of conflicts and foster development.
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is taking significant steps to promote lasting peace in the Niger Delta by adopting inclusive and transformational conflict management strategies. This approach aims to involve all stakeholders, especially traditional rulers and local communities, in addressing the root causes of conflicts and fostering sustainable development.
During a recent retreat organized by the NDDC’s Department of Dispute and Conflict Resolution (DCR) in Lagos, Dr. Naomi Akpan-Ita, Executive Director of IMPACT, emphasized the importance of shifting from transactional to transformational crisis management approaches. She highlighted that viewing conflicts as opportunities for positive change can lead to rebuilding relationships and structures more positively. Dr. Akpan-Ita noted that this mindset requires building trust, enthusiasm, and openness among stakeholders, encouraging innovative solutions.
In line with this perspective, the NDDC has been collaborating with the Traditional Rulers of Oil and Mineral Producing Communities of Niger Delta (TROMPCON) to empower traditional rulers and local communities. Through training and capacity-building programs, the commission supports community-led development projects and peace-building initiatives. This collaboration aims to address challenges such as poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation, which are often at the heart of conflicts in the region.
The NDDC’s commitment to transformational development is further demonstrated by its efforts to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The commission is exploring collaborative strategies with organizations like the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to revitalize its operations and enhance its impact in the region.
By embracing inclusive and transformational approaches to conflict management, the NDDC aims to create an environment conducive to sustainable peace and development in the Niger Delta. This strategy underscores the importance of involving all stakeholders in the peace-building process, ensuring that solutions are community-driven and address the underlying issues contributing to conflicts.
