Former Kaduna Governor Highlights Region’s Role in National Unity

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has emphasised the critical role of the Niger Delta in maintaining Nigeria’s unity. During a condolence visit in Abuja, he described the region as the “glue” keeping the nation intact amidst current challenges.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has highlighted the pivotal role of the Niger Delta in preserving Nigeria’s unity. Speaking during a condolence visit to the residence of the late Chief Edwin Clark in Abuja, El-Rufai noted that the nation faces significant challenges, and the Niger Delta has been instrumental in holding the country together.

El-Rufai praised Chief Clark’s leadership in uniting the Niger Delta people, contributing to Nigeria’s stability and development. He reflected on the civil war era, stating that if the Midwest region had joined Biafra, Nigeria’s existence would have been jeopardised. He credited this to patriotic figures like the late General Samuel Ogbemudia, Major David Ejoor, Chief Edwin Clark, and others.

“Our nation and democracy are facing great danger; it’s an existential threat. The Niger Delta has been the glue holding the country together. All people of goodwill must unite to ensure we have leadership that will make Nigeria better for everyone,” El-Rufai stated.

He urged the Niger Delta community to continue the good work of Pa Clark, acknowledging his fatherly role throughout his lifetime. El-Rufai also mentioned his ongoing project to document the legacies of Nigeria’s six living former presidents, aiming to highlight their experiences and contributions to the nation.

“Nigeria is fortunate to have six former presidents still alive and active. We are not fully utilising their experiences and learning from their mistakes. This project aims to shed light on their legacies and the importance of courageous leadership,” he added.

El-Rufai’s remarks underscore the significance of the Niger Delta in Nigeria’s past and present, calling for continued unity and effective leadership to navigate the nation’s challenges.
