The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken decisive action against prominent members accused of anti-party activities, expelling Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and several others during its national convention held over the weekend. The expulsions, described by party insiders as wielding the “big stick,” underscore the ongoing internal crisis that has fractured Nigeria’s main opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The convention, which took place on November 15-16, 2025, also saw the election of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as the new National Chairman, a move aimed at stabilizing the party’s leadership amid turmoil. Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, emerged victorious in a contentious vote, signaling a shift towards reconciliation for some factions while deepening divides for others.

The full list of expelled members includes Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and eight others, bringing the total to at least 11 high-profile figures ousted for alleged disloyalty and actions detrimental to the party’s interests. Wike, a key player from the Niger Delta region and former Rivers State Governor, has been at the center of the PDP’s infighting since his fallout with the party leadership following the 2023 presidential primaries. His expulsion has sparked mixed reactions, with some PDP chieftains, like former campaign spokesman Umar Sani, endorsing the decision as necessary for party discipline.

In a swift response, Wike dismissed the expulsion, claiming those responsible were “intoxicated” and questioning the legitimacy of the process. The move has also divided PDP governors, with figures like Adamawa’s Ahmadu Fintiri and Plateau’s Caleb Mutfwang distancing themselves from the expulsions, calling instead for unity and dialogue to prevent further fragmentation. This split among governors highlights the precarious state of the PDP, with some state structures in five states reportedly dissolved as part of the convention’s resolutions.

Adding to the drama, former Senate President Bukola Saraki had urged the suspension of the November 15-16 convention, citing pending court orders that could invalidate proceedings. Despite these calls, the event proceeded, leading to accusations of procedural irregularities from dissenting voices. The crisis has raised concerns about the PDP’s ability to mount a unified challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in upcoming polls, particularly in the Niger Delta where Wike’s influence remains strong in Rivers State politics.

Analysts suggest the expulsions could exacerbate tensions in the oil-rich region, potentially affecting local alliances and governance. Bode George, a PDP elder, announced the decisions, framing them as essential for purging elements undermining the party’s cohesion. Meanwhile, social media reactions on X have been fervent, with users debating the implications for Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

The PDP’s national secretariat has yet to release an official communique detailing the full outcomes, but sources indicate further disciplinary actions may follow. As the dust settles, the party’s ability to heal internal rifts will be crucial for its survival and relevance.
