Simon Stiell urges Nigeria to embrace climate action as a pathway to economic development and poverty reduction.

The UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, has stated that strong climate action can help Nigeria achieve its economic goals, including lifting 100 million people out of poverty and driving 7% annual growth. He emphasised that addressing climate change is not just about reducing emissions but also about creating jobs, improving health, and fostering economic progress.

The UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, has highlighted the potential of climate action as a key driver for Nigeria’s economic transformation. Speaking at the Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove and Art symposium in Lagos, Stiell commended Nigeria’s leadership in tackling climate change despite limited international support.

He noted that climate action could significantly contribute to the country’s ambition of lifting 100 million people out of poverty and achieving a 7% annual economic growth rate. Stiell stressed that addressing climate change goes beyond cutting carbon emissions—it also presents opportunities for job creation, improved public health, and long-term economic stability.

The UN Climate Chief encouraged Nigeria to continue its efforts in promoting sustainable development, stating that a strong commitment to climate policies could unlock new avenues for prosperity. He further called on international partners to provide the necessary support for Nigeria to meet its climate and development goals.

As climate change continues to impact vulnerable communities, especially in regions like the Niger Delta, experts believe that prioritising climate action can lead to sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and the economy.
