Yoruba Union Faults Tinubu’s Leadership, Demands Public Trial for Army Officers Arrested Over Alleged Coup Plot

SEO Deck: The socio-cultural group, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has sharply criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, linking a reported coup plot to government weakness, rising insecurity, and citizen impoverishment. The Yoruba Union is demanding the Nigerian Army provide a transparent, public trial for the detained officers to dispel fears of political persecution within the military.

Leadership Failure Blamed for Instability

The Yoruba Union, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, released a statement describing the recent alleged coup plot—which led to the detention of senior military officers—as a direct reflection of a weak government. The group argued that the Tinubu administration has failed to curb rising insecurity, is continually negotiating with terrorists, and has deliberately impoverished its citizens.

The Union warned that the increasing hardship, coupled with widespread corruption, has created a volatile atmosphere that could easily ignite unrest. While affirming they do not support any unconstitutional change of government, they cautioned that a government which “deliberately impoverishes its citizens, ignores their suffering, and protects corrupt officials” is “sowing the seeds of instability and eventual rebellion.”

Demand for Transparency in Military Arrests

The core of the Union’s demand centres on the alleged arrest of 16 senior military officers by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) over the suspected coup plot. The Yoruba Union called on the Nigerian Army to:

  1. Publicly Publish the offences of the detained officers.
  2. Ensure their trial is conducted transparently and publicly.
  3. Release a White Paper detailing the identities, charges, and evidence against the officers.

The group stated that this transparency is necessary to dispel growing rumours of political persecution or an attempt to silence dissent within the military ranks. They warned that the Army “must not be used as an instrument of political manipulation” and insisted that Nigerians deserve to see credible evidence if the officers were indeed plotting against the government.

The Union further criticised President Tinubu for cancelling the traditional Independence Day celebration on October 1st, viewing the presidency’s excuse of prioritising “bilateral engagements abroad” as both “insulting and irresponsible” to the Nigerian people.
